Gypsy and the Cat can fuck off.

Gypsy and the Cat make the most middle of the road average uninspired repetitive crap I have heard in a while. The fact their singer has a high vocal range and can somehow use a keyboard does not make up for any of the hype they receive. I have watched them play live twice and both times they were thoroughly arrogant and disappointing, playing a horrifically out of time and out of key cover of Justice and Simbian’s “We are your friends.” It literally made me turn on my heal and leave. They strike me as two guys who thought to themselves, what’s the easiest way to be successful? Let’s suck any sort of emotional depth of creativity out of the process and meld everything that is popular together into one streaming non-sensical rip-off of a song. (See Toto’s ‘Africa‘). Their popularity with the pseudo-hispter scene and their cross-over potential to the mainstream is everything that is wrong with popular music. Their whole aesthetic is a purposely engineered attempt at luring the sort of pseudo-edgy hipster-appealing pret-a-porter loving wanker, while somehow simultaneousnesly managing to entice the Powderfinger live DVD-owning bogan. The recognition this band has received is totally undeserved when there is such great music being made by other more deserving artists. They are good at being popular, not making music. I have had enough of them, they can fuck right off.
