Bonkers – Dizzee Rascal
We have a friend who was always a bit of a black sheep in his family. His parents were hugely successful and his older brother had blitzed his way through school. He was never too enthralled with school and while not stupid, he didn’t have the work ethic or the attention span to achieve to his potential. However, for a few weeks every year his parents would go away sailing, leaving there two sons at home. This certain event involves a week when the older brother was also absent.
What resulted was a week of mayhem, as four mates all crashed his house for the whole week, while every night various others came and went but really it was the day that was most interesting. On the first day, we had this amazing psychic moment. As I arrived, three of us insisted on playing this new ridiculous song we’d just started hearing. Sure enough, all of us wanted to play Bonkers. We played it on repeat for about four hours that day and over the whole week up to 200 times.
These days, I’m not a huge fan of Dizzee Rascal, but I still enjoy this song from time to time. It reminds me of walking around Kew with Declan dressed like Jesus, hanging out in the California Hotel with Declan throwing an Iron through a window, lighting a fire in his back courtyard and using it to cook a steak using a trolley as a grill, and the ill-fated “Toptional” party. Oh to be young.
